Piloting “Who does play what?” – first insights into a DataSETUP module at the GDM 2025

📊💡 Bringing Data Science into University-level Pre-Service Teacher Education!

At the 2025 German Annual Conference on Mathematics Education (GDM), we presented our project DataSETUP! 🎓✨ Our goal: Integrating data science into teacher education, because statistical & data literacy are crucial for the future! 🚀

👩‍🏫 Our interactive modules, like “Who Plays What?” on digital gaming engage students in hands-on data exploration activities using digital tools. Here are some of our first insights from the piloting of the very first DataSETUP module:

🔎 Key findings:
✅ Pre-service teachers actively engage with data before formulating research questions through our module – a promising sign for data literacy!
❗ Communicating results effectively remains a challenge – more support is needed and will therefore be tackled in one of our next DataSETUP modules.
📊 Many pre-service teachers set their own research focus, highlighting the importance of working with multivariate and motivating data sets.

We’re refining our approach and expanding our modules! Stay tuned.
