The aim of this module is to:

  • Expose pre-service teachers to a real-world phenomenon (Coronal Mass Ejections) that can be solved using a data science approach
  • Explore available sources of data and sourcing pre-existing data sets. Exploration of the data set to glean insights into the structure of the data (e.g. identification of variables, types of data, distributions, visualizations) defining and framing the specific question or problem that the data science project aims to solve.
  • Define and frame the specific question or problem that the data science project aims to solve.
  • Familiarize pre-service teachers with data science practices such as exploratory data analysis and data visualizations
  • Introduce pre-service teachers to using a data analysis tool (CODAP)
  • Help pre-service teachers explore historical data, observe patterns of periodicity that supports them in a prediction process
